William “Bill” M. Smith, age 69, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home, on Thursday morning, June 24, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 3, 1940, in Swanton, Ohio, to Stephen and Isabel (Myers) Smith. He married Susan Winter on August 27, 1960. Bill worked for Toledo Towel Supply for several years, and then became a concrete finisher, retiring in 2002.
Bill was a lifetime charter member of the Swanton Elks Lodge #2462 where he served as a past exalted ruler and chairman of the trustees; he was known at the Elks as the “Can Man”. He enjoyed woodworking, wine-making, gardening and golfing. Bill was an avid golf ball hunter and mole exterminator. The Christmas season was Bill’s favorite time of the year and he was known for his outstanding yard display.
Besides his loving wife of 49 years, Sue, Bill is survived by his children, Timothy (Debi) Smith, and Terence (Sharon) Smith; grandchildren, Chris, Rob (Nikki), Jerry, Lauren, Hannah, Chloe, and Madison; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jake; siblings, Donald (Maxine) Smith, Rosemary Ott, Bob, Jerry, and Lucille Smith, Helen (Rich) Gillen, and Theresa (Jeff) McArthur; sisters-in-law, Mary Ada and Shirley Smith.
He is preceded in death by his parent and brothers, Chuck, John, and Pat Smith.
Friends and family may visit Sunday, June 27th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, Ohio, where an Elks service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday morning, June 28th, from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Resurrection at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Raab Road at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at East Swanton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elks Charity Account or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
