William Aaron Brodbeck, 78, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal life Wednesday evening, August 11, 2010 in his home surrounded by his entire family. He was born on April 10, 1932, in St. Mary’s, Ohio, to Arthur and Thelma (Sampson) Brodbeck. He married his high school sweetheart Mary “Jakie” Holtzhauer on May 8, 1954. Bill graduated from St. Mary’s Memorial High School, where he was a proud “Roughrider” football player.

Bill served in the United States Marine Corp and he was stationed for 14 months in Korea, during the Korean War. He returned to civilian life as a lineman for the city of St Mary’s, Ohio. Later he moved to Swanton and was employed by High Voltage and L.E.Meyers, Inc., Toledo, Ohio. He was an IBEW 245 member for over 40 years. Bill’s greatest love was his family. He was an active member of St. Richard’s Catholic Community. He was instrumental in starting the C.Y.O. football program at Saint Richard School in 1967, serving as their first coach. He was also a former president of the Swanton Athletic Booster’s Club and Past Grand Knight of the Knight’s of Columbus Sacred Heart Council #2850. Bill was a member of the Swanton American Legion Post #479, and paid tribute to his comrades by serving with the Honor Guard. In his retirement, Bill enjoyed fishing, reading, Ohio State football, and watching his grandchildren in their activities and sporting events.

He is survived by the love of his life, Mary and their children, Chris (Tony) Williamson, Ann Buetow, Mike (Sue) Brodbeck, Joe Brodbeck, Xavier (Pam) Brodbeck, Aileen (Kevin) Berry, Bonita Brown, Betty (Jay) Perrin, Jennifer (Mike) Schmidt, and Lorma (Dave) Wendt. Grandchildren, Gabe, Anthony, Trista, Lee, Neal, Patti, Amanda, Nate, Molly, Kate, Brian, Brittany, Trent, Kimberly, Travis, Jaycee, Tyler, Alex, Andrea, Lydia, Marcus, Augusta, Chaz, Erika, Gannon, and four great-grand children.

Surviving also is his brother Thomas (Cathy) Brodbeck, his sister Nancy (Richard) McCreedy, and sister-in-law Patricia Monger.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mel Buetow, and sister-in-law, Anna Brodbeck.

The family would like to recognize the extraordinary loving care that the staff of Swanton Health Care provided Bill during his stay as a resident.

Friends and family may visit Sunday, August 15th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be offered Monday August 16th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church, with Fr. Daniel J. Zak officiating. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery with Military Honors.

Bill’s charitable interest currently is the St. Richard’s Student Tuition Assistance Program, and the Knights of Columbus Pro-Life Ultrasound Project.
