Wilbur C. Byers, age 87, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Monday morning, February 11, 2008 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, following a recent stroke. He was born December 12, 1920 in Toledo, Ohio to Charles and May (Weber) Byers. He was a WWII United States Army veteran with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment and recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. He married Ida Faye Gordon on July 19, 1941. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1991. Also preceding him in death were his parents; grandchildren, Shawn Byers and Shannon Byers; and one brother.
Wilbur was a highway maintenance worker for ODOT on the Ohio Turnpike until his retirement in 1982. He was a life member of the Swanton American Legion Post #479 and V.F.W. Swanton Memorial Post #8598. He loved fishing and camping.
Wilbur is survived by his children, Don Byers, Dale Byers and Karen Bundy; grandchildren, Krista (Nick) Pelland, Anthony Like and Destinie Peterson; great-grandchildren, Travis, Nathaniel, Haylee and Logan Pelland and Madelyn Alderman; as well as two brothers and special friend, Joan Zahner.
Friends and family may visit Wednesday, February 13th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Daniel W. Bellavia officiating. Interment will follow at East Swanton Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
