Walter Wayne Garland

July 17, 1946 — May 11, 2015

Walter Wayne Garland, age 68, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside, Monday evening, May 11, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born July 17, 1946 in Fonde, Kentucky to Raymond Bee and Elta (Rose) Garland. Walter was a 1964 graduate of Pruden High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served in the Vietnam War. On July 13, 1968, he married his beloved wife, Dorothea Jean Hamblin.

Walter was a lifelong member of Fonde Baptist Church in Fonde, Kentucky and was a faithful American Red Cross blood donor for his entire adult life. He worked as a machine and press operator for 31 years 3 months at GM Powertrain, retiring in 2001, and was a proud member of UAW Local 14.

Walter enjoyed woodworking, taking walks and bike riding with his wife, Jean at Secor Metropark, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jean; sons, Kenny (Tina) Garland and Brian (Jansen) Garland; grandchildren, Toby, Dakota, Maizee, Amelia, Charlotte, Sawyer and Sutton; his siblings, Kenneth Garland, Judy Lowe, and Kathleen (George) Brooks; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Bill) Sturgell, Kaye (Lamar) Steele, and Gayle (Charles) Huddleston; brothers-in-law, Bennie (Jan) Hamblin, Van (Slylvia) Hamblin, and Larry (Jan) Hamblin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elta; sister, Fayetta Odom; brother, Richard Garland; and special brother-in-law, Bobby Charles Hamblin; father-in-law, Ben Hamblin; and mother-in-law, Dorothy Hamblin.

Family and friends may visit Saturday, May 16th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton (419.826.2631). Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 17th at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home, with his son, Kenneth Garland officiating and Jeff Monhollen and Roy Picket assisting. Interment will follow at Sharples Cemetery.
