Viola Mae Griffin, age 80, a lifelong Swanton, Ohio area resident, died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at her residence, surrounded by family. She was born October 17, 1930 in Ai, Ohio to Clarence Avon Wise and Phoebe Alice Hall. She was Swanton Corn Festival Queen of 1948, and Swanton High School graduate, Class of 1948. On December 10, 1960, she married Dean Griffin. He preceded her in death on August 22, 1994. Viola was a secretary for The Andersons in Maumee.

Viola was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Swanton American Legion Post #479 Ladies Auxiliary, Swanton Elks Lodge 2462, and honorary member of the Swanton Rescue Unit.

Viola’s numerous hobbies included avid gardening – both at home and in the Swanton business district, participating in local bowling leagues and ones sponsored by The Andersons. She loved crocheting, baking excellent cookies and making peanut brittle. Viola enjoyed traveling to Charlevoix, Michigan to visit her daughter and granddaughter and taking trips together to urban cities, remote cabins, and ocean-side communities, where there was ample time for sightseeing, board games, cards, laughter, discovery, and camaraderie.

Left to cherish Viola’s memory is her daughter, LuAnn Griffin of Charlevoix, MI, and granddaughter, Phoebe (Allport) Malkowicz, who with her husband, Evan, are in active military duty in Germany and Afghanistan. The family of nephew, David and Janet Hines, has been a source of joy, comfort, companionship, and purpose through the years.

Besides her husband, Dean, Viola was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, LaVerne Hines.
