Verda R. Wheating, age 86, of Swanton, Ohio, a cherished member of her family and community, departed this life Thursday afternoon, December 19, 2024, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Born on July 26, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio, Verda lived a life rich in love, dedication, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by those who knew her well.
Verda found purpose in her work, dedicating 14 years to the food service department at Swanton Valley Nursing Facility. Her gentle spirit and unwavering commitment to nurturing others left an indelible mark on the lives she touched—a testament to her natural ability to care for and uplift those around her.
On November 6, 1954, Verda married the love of her life, Lassiter Wheating, a union that thrived until his passing on September 1, 2014. Their life together was a tapestry woven with mutual respect, love, and the joys of family. She relished the role of matriarch, surrounded by her two sons, Dale (Cindy) Wheating and Lassiter "Junior" Wheating, and daughter, Bonnie (Terry) Bennett, embracing the joys of motherhood that brought her immeasurable pride. Verda's heart swelled with love for her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, each of whom filled her life with joy and laughter. She also shared a special bond with her first cousin, Rita Nogman, who was like a second daughter to her. Additionally, Verda's sister-in-law, Leatha Walters, added to the fabric of her extensive family.
Outside of her family, Verda was an avid flower gardener, creating vibrant gardens that reflected her zest for life and appreciation for nature’s beauty. She found joy in camping, cherishing the memories created in the great outdoors.
Verda now joins her beloved husband, Lassiter, as well as her deceased relatives, including her mother, Blanche; brothers, Tom Walters and Bill Walters; and sisters, Georgia, Marie, and Barbara. Her departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her spirit will endure in the blooms of her gardens and in the cherished moments shared with her family.
A graveside service to honor Verda’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 30th at Swanton Cemetery, located at 629 S. Main Street in Swanton, with Pastor Mike Wise officiating.
