Stanley H. Jewell, life-long resident of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal life, Wednesday morning, June 11, 2014 at Ebied Hospice in Sylvania. He was 82. Stanley was born October 12, 1931 in Swanton to Howard and Blanche (Hobbs) Jewell and was a 1949 graduate of Swanton High School. He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1951-1955. Following the service in 1955, he was introduced by his aunt Margie Meyer to Stella Smigelski. Two years later, on May 18, 1957, they married. Together they raised four children and were members of St. Richard Catholic Parish.
Stanley started working at Bridgeport Brass in Adrian, Michigan. In 1960, he was hired by the Village of Swanton to work at the Swanton Sewage Plant. He worked in this position for 32 years. He was also a 32-year member on the Swanton Fire Department, retiring in 1992.
Stanley loved his garden which he tended to for 50 years. He made sure he shared with his neighbors the vegetables he harvested. Stanley also loved going fishing with friends and relatives. He was a generous blood donor, donating 107 times for a total of 13 gallons over his lifetime. Stanley was an avid Green Bay Packers, Ohio State Buckeyes and Boston Red Sox Fan.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 57 years, Stella; children, Sue (Mike) Hopkins, David Jewell, Sharon (Bob) Lumbrezer and Michael (Jennifer) Jewell; 8 grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa), Scott (Erin), Brent, Brian, Taylor, Hannah, and twins, Sophie and Sarah; as well as his sister, Violet Kinkaid and brother, Robert Jewell.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Andrew Jewell; brothers, Glen, Lester, and John Jewell; and his infant sister.
Family and friends may visit Friday, June 13th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where a Fireman's Last Alarm Service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m., followed by the reciting of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, June 14th from 10:00 am. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard’s Catholic Church, where a Mass of Resurrection will begin at 11:00 a.m with Fr. Robert Holden presiding and Deacon Jerry Ziemkiewicz assisting. Interment, with Military Rites, will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Richard's Church or Swanton Fire Department.
