Shirley C. Long

Calling Hours: Friday, January 27th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton

Shirley C. Long, age 85, of Swanton, Ohio, entered peacefully into heaven, Monday evening, January 23, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 5, 1926 in Auckland, New Zealand to William and Gertrude (Williams) Roxburgh. She was married over 50 years to Frederick F. Long. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1998. Shirley retired as store manager from the former Petrie’s Department Store.

Shirley and her husband enjoyed seven wonderful years at their home in Florida. She loved gardening, painting artwork, and sewing. When Frederick died, she moved back to Swanton to be closer to family. She cherished her time as caretaker of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a spunky lady who enjoyed yodeling and being with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Anne-Shirley (Tom) Steusloff; son, Peter (Barbara) Bredenbeck; stepdaughter, Annette (Chris) Hartley; grandchildren, Kristina, Jennifer, Linda-Marie, Jacquelyn, Teresa, Karen, Tom, Jr., Kurt, and Ryan; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and siblings, Molly, June, Gay, and Trevor.

Besides her husband, Frederick; Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Velma; and brothers, Billy, Christopher, and Lyndon.

Family and friends may visit Friday, January 27th from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where services celebrating her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Chaplain Rob Beisser officiating. Interment will follow at South Swanton Cemetery.

Thank you to the outstanding nurses, doctors, and caregivers of Erie West Hospice and Visiting Angels for the wonderful care given to our Mum and Nana the past several months.
