Shirley A. Keener

Shirley A. Keener, age 75, of Swanton, Ohio passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 4, 2014, with her loving family at her bedside. Shirley was born November 27, 1938 in Okolona, Ohio to Albert and Alma (Oberhaus) Meyer. She was a 1956 graduate of Maumee High School. On November 25, 1961, Shirley married her loving husband, Milton Keener. Shirley managed the books for the family farm while raising a daughter and 3 sons. When the children were grown and left the house, she worked for Cleveland Plant and Flower, and later as a bank teller for National City Bank.

Shirley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton. She and her husband were members of Bay View Yacht Club and being on the water was one of her favorite pastimes.

Shirley will be remembered as an inspirational and overall genuine person, who put others needs and interests above her own. She was extremely dedicated to her family. One of her greatest joys was to spend time with her grandchildren and attend every event she could. They fondly referred to her as “Monga”, which she cherished. When family and friends arrived at the house, she would stop everything she was doing to focus all of her attention on them. They wouldn’t leave hungry either, as Shirley was an amazing cook.

Shirley will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 52 years Milton; daughter, Connie (Randy) Bachman of Grand Rapids, OH; sons, Michael (Wendy) Keener of Maumee, OH, and Stephen (Amy) Keener of Phoenixville, PA; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Keener of Dublin, OH; 10 grandchildren; and sisters, Jean (Virgil) Behnfeldt and Dolores (Robert) Hanf.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Gregory William Keener, who was called to be with the Lord on Friday, February 28, 2014.

A visitation for Shirley and a memorial service for her son Greg will be held Monday, March 10th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton (419.826.2631). Visitation will continue Tuesday, March 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 N. Main St. in Swanton, where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor J.T. Bean officiating. Interment will follow at Sharples Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made at any Huntington Bank location, c/o Gregory W. Keener Memorial Fund, which has been set up for his children's education fund.
