Shane A. Schmidt was born on October 3, 1971 to Barb and Bill Schmidt. He passed away unexpectedly Saturday, October 22, 2011 in a farming accident at home.

Shane was a 1990 graduate of Swanton High School. Throughout his school years Shane served on Student Council; he was involved in 4-H and enjoyed football and wrestling. He also enjoyed woodworking and created many unique gifts for others. He was a member of the Swanton American Legion and the Swanton Elks. He graduated with an associate’s degree in Agri-Business Management from Owens Community College in 1999.

Shane married Shelly Meek on April 13, 2002 and they have built a life raising their family, Morgan, Rayna, and Mason. Shane’s family meant the world to him and he would have moved heaven and earth for them.

Shane was a loving son to Bill & Barb Schmidt. He was a protective brother to Greg (Melanie) Schmidt and Jennifer (Eric) Barnes. He also leaves to cherish his memory Grandmothers; Helen Schmidt and Doris Cleghorn. In-Laws, Ron & Linda Meek, Kristie (Chip) Tokar, and Kelly (Debby) Meek. Shane was also very special to eight nephews and four nieces, as well as a large extended family and many friends. Shane was preceded in death by dear friend, Allan Wegener; Grandfathers, Robert Cleghorn and Paul Schmidt; Niece, Lily Schmidt and Cousin, Timothy Berkebile.

Shane was an amazing man who was passionate about many things in life and had a heart as big as the life he lived. When someone was in need, Shane was willing to do anything he could to help, often selflessly putting others before himself. Shane was always the silent helper, never expecting anything in return. Because he was so grateful to everyone who helped him, Shane felt it was a privilege to run Rescue for the Village of Swanton for many years.

His love of farming was apparent at a very young age and continued to grow as he did, until after graduation he worked for various local agri-businesses, as well as at the family farm/greenhouse, Schmidt Bros., Inc. Shane was currently employed at Wilbur Ellis in Lyons, Ohio.

He enjoyed cooking, hunting, family and friends. The grin on Shane’s face and the sparkle in his eyes was sure to put a smile on the face of anyone around him. He believed in living for today, because during his life he had experienced enough to understand the importance of the present.
