Richard Patrick Walsh, age 89, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal life, Tuesday afternoon, September 28, 2010 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was born March 21, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to John and Sarah (Mattimoe) Walsh. Richard served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was stationed in Europe and African Continent with the 103rd Barrage Balloon Battalion. Upon his return home from duty, he married Mary C. Wimmer on November 6, 1948. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2009. Richard retired from Jeep. Until only a few months ago, he remained active repairing garage doors in the Swanton area.
Richard was a member of Swanton American Legion Post #479, and was very active with the Honor Guard. He was a faithful 55-year parishioner of St. Richard Catholic Parish, where he was involved with the charismatic prayer group and CHRP. He also served several years as Treasurer of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Richard unselfishly donated his time with Hands of Grace and drove the sick and elderly from the Parish to appointments. He also was a very knowledgeable and avid sports fan.
Richard is survived by his children, James (Maryann) Walsh, Dennis Walsh, Cathy Baker, Richard Walsh, Molly (Hal) Brown, and Peggy (Marcia) Walsh; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Bob Lyons.
Besides his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary, Richard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Lyons and Anna Walsh; daughter-in-law, Janet Walsh; and son-in-law, Mark Baker.
Friends and family may visit Friday, October 1st from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where the Military Rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Saturday, October 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel J. Zak officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Richard Parish or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
