Richard "Dick" Slawinski

Richard S. Slawinski, age 88, a longtime resident and businessman of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Thursday morning, January 17, 2013, at Swanton Health Care Center. He was born to Richard and Jane (Blachowski) Slawinski on September 26, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio, and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1942. On February 15, 1947, he married his beloved wife, Norma Jeanne Walsh.

Dick was the proprietor of K-C Bowling Lanes in Swanton for 36 years. A member of St. Richard Catholic Parish in Swanton, he was President and Secretary of the Parish Council when it was organized. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Council of the Knights of Columbus and of the Toledo General Assembly Fourth Degree, having been a member since 1945.

Dick was a 37-year member of the Swanton Volunteer Fire Department. A charter member of the Swanton Rotary Club for 50 years, he attained the position of President and Secretary, having served the Presidency for 2 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Richard spent 4 years on the Swanton Village Council in the 70’s when the new Municipal Building was built.

Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Norma Jeanne; sons, Richard P. (Virginia) Slawinski of Richfield Center, Thomas (Eloise) Slawinski of Assumption, OH, Donald (Bonnie) Slawinski of Thornton, CO, Steven (Sue) Slawinski of Swanton, OH, William (Patricia) Slawinski of Toledo, OH, Kenneth (Mindi) Slawinski of Delta, OH and Joseph (Wendy) Slawinski of Swanton, OH; daughter, Mary Jeanne (Hal) Stine of Delta, OH; 25 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin Saturday evening, January 19th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, and will continue Sunday, January 20th from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Funeral Home, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Monday, January 21st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church, 333 Brookside Dr., where Richard’s body will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Father Douglas Garand will preside and Deacon Jerry Ziekiewicz will assist. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Richard Church, Swanton Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
