Richard Ralph Mayers

Enfield, New Hampshire

Richard Ralph Mayers, of Delta, Ohio, was born on July 6th, 1925 in West Brownsville Pennsylvania to Richard Ralph and Mary Elizabeth Mayers, and died on April 24, 2015 at age 89. Education played a central role in Richard’s life, and he received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College. He also received his Master of Arts Degrees from Wesleyan University and Texas A&M University and attended government sponsored summer programs at 10 colleges throughout the country, including Harvard, Johns Hopkins University, Pennsylvania State University, and LSU.

He was an officer in the United States Navy who served in WWII on the Midway, and also served in the Korean War. After WWII, Richard taught at Hood College, Colby College, Defiance College, and the University of Surrey in England. Atomic and Nuclear Physics were his favorite subjects to teach. Richard served as a physicist for the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. as well as serving on the National Science Advisory Panel. He was a long time member of Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honors Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Association of Science. As a research engineer for Midland Ross, Toledo, Richard obtained five patents with the U.S. government.

Despite his accolades, his favorite pastimes were spending time with his family and enjoying sports. Richard is preceded in death by his loving wife, Janet Peterson Mayers. He is survived by daughter, Stephanie DeLuna of Garland, TX, son-in-law, David DeLuna, and grandchildren Anna and Micah DeLuna, daughter, Valerie Edwards of Delta, OH, and grandchildren, Jessica and Ethan Edwards, and sister, Marie Yale of Pontiac, MI.

Richard will be buried next to his wife, Janet, in Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, New Hampshire.
