Raymond J. Burgermeister, age 82, of Metamora, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, February 14, 2010. He was born October 19, 1927, in Blissfield, Michigan to Edward and Helen (Pflum) Burgermeister. He married Honey Lou Jacob on July 15, 1950, and she preceded him in death on September 9, 2007. Ray graduated from Metamora High School, “Class of ‘46”. Soon after, he pitched semi-pro baseball for the Chicago Cubs minor league team, The Marion Cubs.
Skilled in his trade, he was the owner of Buckeye Drywall, a business that spanned 60 years. A mentor and friend to those in his employ, he displayed a positive attitude and dedication to a strong work ethic.
He will be missed and remembered as a kind and generous man who enriched our lives.
A longstanding member of the United States Trotting Association, he owned many horses throughout 30 years in racing.
During his lifetime, Ray was a Detroit Tigers enthusiast, sponsored bowling teams, and enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golf, restaurants, snowmobiling, cooking, travel, and sharing good times with good friends.
Ray was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and served on the Metamora-Amboy Township Fire Department for 25 years.
His family finds comfort in knowing he found strength and peace in the Lord.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Debra (Franklin) Witt; son, Randal (Teresa) Burgermeister; grandchildren, Joshua (Jessica) Burgermeister, Jessica Burgermeister, Nathan Witt, and Emily Witt; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ella Burgermeister; brother, Edward “Duke” (Carol) Burgermeister; sister, Rosemary (Larry) Truckor; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Burgermeister; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Honey Lou, Ray was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, John and Robert “Peck”.
Friends and family may visit Wednesday, February 17th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where a Fireman’s Last Alarm Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 18th, followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Interment will follow at Amboy Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
