Philip J. Moore, “PJ”, age 79, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family, Sunday evening, December 26, 2010. He was born October 6, 1931 in Elyria, Ohio to Max and Mary Ann (Bryson) Moore. He was a 1949 graduate of Clay High School and joined the United States Marine Corps, served a 13-month combat tour assigned to the 1st Marine Division during the Korean Conflict. On December 26, 1953 he married his beloved wife, Beverly R. Heising.

Philip was appointed to the Toledo Police Division on November 1, 1959. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1965, Lieutenant in 1972, and promoted to Captain in 1976. He headed several divisions within the Department including; Crime Prevention, Public Information, Community Relations, School Safety Education, Training, Recruitment, and Records. Philip retired from the Toledo Police Division on July 5, 1984. He went on to work for the Lucas County Coroner’s Office and worked 6 years as Chief of Security at Owens Community College.

Philip joined the Ohio Military Reserve in September, 1983, as a captain. He commanded the 43rd Military Police Battalion and the 4th Military Police Brigade; served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and then Chief of Staff. He retired in 1996 as the Deputy Commander for Training and Operations with the rank of Brigadier General. During his service he was responsible for the creation of the Commanders’ Training Academy and was awarded the Ohio Commendation Medal. Up until the time of his death, Philip remained active after his retirement, serving as the Senior Advisor to the Commanding General.

Philip was a member of Church of the Cross United Methodist. He was also a member of the Swanton Elks - BPOE 2462; Swanton VFW Memorial Post #8598; Swanton American Legion Post #479; American Legion Police Post #512, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #40; Toledo Police Command Officers Assoc.; Lucas County Sheriff’s Office; OMR officers’ Assoc.; Ohio Chiefs of Police; National Chiefs of Police; Wood County Chiefs of Police; American Society of Industrial Security; and the Toledo Area Alarm Association.

Philip was an avid deer hunter and outdoorsman.

He was very proud of his entire family. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Beverly; children, Dr. Philip (Ruth) Moore, Cynthia Moore, Jeffrey (Brenda) Moore, and Kelly (Scott) Houser; grandchildren Philip, Sabrina, Dustin, and Julia; sisters, Margaret “Peg” and Patricia; brother, Edward; and very special friends, Charlie and Louie.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca; son, Michael; sisters, Mary Ann and Sally; and brother, Thomas.

Friends and family may visit Thursday, December 30th from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419.826.2631), where an Elks service will be held at 7:00 p.m. followed by an American Legion service. Visitation will continue Friday morning, December 31st, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Church of the Cross United Methodist, 1806 Cass Road (at Eastgate) in Toledo, where services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Steve Judson officiating. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
