Melvene Walters

August 13, 1921 — May 14, 2012

Calling Hours: Thursday, May 17th from 3 to 8 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton

Melvene M. Walters, age 90, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside, Monday morning, May 14, 2012, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. She was born August 13, 1921 in Swanton, Ohio to Charles and Anna (Maas) Miller. Melvene was a 1939 graduate of Swanton High School. On July 23, 1940, she married her beloved husband, Voyle.

Melvene owned and operated Walter’s Flower Shop in Swanton. She was very active in the business for 30 years, retiring at the age of 80. She was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton, Order of the Eastern Star Fulton Chapter #67, and Delphian Study Group.

She and Voyle enjoyed ballroom dancing, traveling throughout Europe and out West, going out to eat, and gambling at the Casinos. Up until a recent stroke six months ago, she remained very active doing what she loved most – cooking, reading the Bible, and driving her car. Melvene enjoyed watching Dancing with the Stars and Wheel of Fortune, solving most of the puzzles quicker than the TV contestants. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 71 years, Voyle; daughters, Nancy (David) Roberts and Cheryl Lovejoy; son, Dave (Judy) Walters; grandchildren, Michael, Kelly, Jeff, Lynne, Rick, Stacey, Jennifer, and Robin; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Alexa, Kali, Kelsey, Jillian, Blake, Keaton, Cole, Alex, Nate, Brynn, and Ben; sister, Hazel Plath; sisters-in-law Berneda Miller and Violet Barnes; and step brothers, Ed, Joe, and Ted Kotlarczyk.

Melvene was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Andy Kotlarczyk; son, Terry Walters, daughter-in-law, Norma Walters; son-in-law, Bob Lovejoy; and siblings, Mike, Harold, Nelson, and Ethel.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 17th from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Visitation will continue Friday, May 18th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Barbara Jean Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Amboy Township Cemetery.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the physicians, nurses, and staff at St. Luke’s hospital, Kingston Care Center and Assisted Living, Odyssey Hospice, and Ebeid Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Melvene over the past six months.
