Mary C. Underwood, age 83, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her home, Thursday evening, July 28, 2011. She was born February 14, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio to Everell and Elizabeth (Foust) Stukey. Mary earned her Master of Education Degree from the University of Toledo and devoted her life to teaching. She spent most of her Junior High School teaching career at Swanton High School and was instrumental in starting up the Swanton Junior High girls sports program.

Mary was a long-standing member of the former First Baptist Church of Swanton. She loved painting outdoor scenery and nature - receiving several blue ribbons at the Fulton County Fair.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jerry Underwood of Delta, OH, Nicholas (Cynthia) Underwood of West Unity, OH, Karen (Steven) Loy of Flint, MI, and Debra Edghill of Dacula, GA; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill (Marilyn) Stukey; sisters, Dorothy (Howard) Slemp and Carole Hahn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth; son, Anthony; and brothers-in-law, Robert Hahn and Walter Vantil.

Family and friends may visit Sunday, July 31st from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419.826.2631). A service celebrating her life will be held Monday, August 1st at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home officiated by her sister-in-law, Marilyn and brother, Bill Stukey. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
