Mary Ann Szabo

Mary Ann Szabo, age 94, life-long resident of Swanton, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, February 11, 2025, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Sylvania. Mary Ann was born July 29, 1930 in Swanton to Francis and Valeria (Geiger) Marvin.  

A graduate of Metamora High School, Mary Ann worked as a meat wrapper at St. Mary's Meats in Assumption and helped her husband operate the family farm. Mary Ann was known for her extraordinary culinary talents, becoming a wonderful cook and baker, renowned for her delicious pastries that brought joy to her family and friends.

A devout Catholic, Mary Ann was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and actively participated in the Rosary & Altar Society, demonstrating her deep commitment to her faith. Her passion for gardening and spending time outdoors reflected her love for nature, which she enjoyed alongside her other hobbies, including crocheting and playing cards with her family and friends.

Above all, Mary Ann cherished her family. She was surrounded by her loved ones during her final moments, leaving behind a legacy of love and togetherness. She shared a profound bond with her late husband, Frank Eugene Szabo, who preceded her in death on August 18, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Terry Szabo, and her siblings, Roseann, Robert, Francis, and Bernard. 

Mary Ann is lovingly remembered by her children: Mike (Lois) Szabo, Barb VanEtten, Alan (Sue) Szabo, Ray (Julie) Szabo, Kathy (Mark) Knapp, Jeanette (Geoff) Yevtich, and Lori (Joe) Siekierda; daughter-in-law, Jeri Szabo; 25 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; as well as her siblings, Nelson (Dorothy) Marvin, Ken (Mary) Marvin, Carolyn (Ron) McKelvey, Irene Nichols, Geraldine (Larry) Finney and Joan (Emory) Fraley; sister-in-law, Theresa Marvin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may visit Friday, February 21st from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 22nd at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, with Fr. Walter Tuscano presiding. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
