Mary Catherine Buchanan

Mary Catherine (Hass) Buchanan, 87, passed away at her residence in Whitehouse, OH after a long illness on October 10, 2012. She was born on May 26, 1925 in Richfield Center (Berkey) OH to Carl and Esther (Borck) Hass. She attended grade school at St. Elizabeth in Richfield Center, OH and graduated from Burnham High School, Sylvania, OH in 1943. Afterwards, she followed a career in professional studio photography and as a laundress before marrying Marvin E. Buchanan on September 22, 1952. He preceded her death in 1998.

Mary is survived by her daughter Catherine (Doug) Bayer of Metamora, OH, son Patrick of North Baltimore, OH and by brother Robert (Marcia) Hass of Petersburg, MI. Also surviving are five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by brothers Carl, Charles, Joseph and Francis.

Throughout her exciting life, Mary was multitalented as a homemaker, an artist, musician, chef, seamstress, gardener, interior decorator, photographer, and florist as she owned the Silken Touch Flower Shop on Providence St. in Whitehouse for a number of years before retiring in 1997. Many of her drawings, paintings and artificial floral arrangements still adorn businesses and households throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeastern Michigan.

Mary especially enjoyed oil painting and took delight in playing her organ, piano and other musical instruments for family members, relatives and guests whenever visiting at her house.

Throughout the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Mary accompanied her husband while he was on work assignment to various foreign locations such as Spain, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia and Iran where she resided at for five years before finally moving back to Whitehouse in 1974.

Family and friends will receive guests Sunday, October 14th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the

Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton, where a rosary service will be held

at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday October 15th at

Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, with Fr. Marty Nassar officiating.

Interment will follow at Whitehouse Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Erie West Promedica Hospice or a charity of donor’s choice.
