In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2024, Maria Lynn Hitts Rohlman went to be with her Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. Left to mourn her passing are her husband and soulmate Joshua Rohlman, her son Michael
Hitts, parents Cynthia Burkey and Rex Hitts, her brothers Jared and Adam (Stacy), her special nephew
Ethan Hitts, her favorite Aunt Vickie Taylor (Tim), her in-laws Ricky and Joan Rohlman, and grandparents
Quentin and Diana Burkey, along with many other family members and friends who knew and loved her,
including her two Scoƫtish terriers, Brodie and Ginger.
Maria was a focused and determined woman. She was born with only one hand, but never really thought
of herself as “handicapped”. She obtained her Masters Degree from Bowling Green State University, and
her Juris Doctorate from Barry University Law School in 2019. In 2020 she graduated at the top of her
class at Washington Law School with a Masters of Law in TaxaƟon and planned to take the Bar Exam in
2024. Maria led the Barry University Law School’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program as the
Top National 2019 VITA Program, which was one of her treasured accomplishments. She also studied
international law in Madrid, Spain one summer at El Escorial.
With her husband Josh, Maria was able to travel to several cities in Europe over the course of their
marriage. In France, Paris was her favorite city where she enjoyed the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. They
were able to visit Marseille and Nice as well. Visits to Spain and Monaco were also a treat for the couple.
She was a big fan of University of Michigan sports, and loved to razz her Buckeye-backing family members
whenever she could. Maria loved all sports, and enjoyed collegiate and professional games of all types.
Her favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves, and she also enjoyed watching the Angels play when
she was living in California. It was common for her to call her young nephew to discuss the merits of their
respective Fantasy Football teams.
Maria will be greatly missed. A private memorial service is planned for the end of June.
