Calling Hours: Friday, November 11th from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton
Leona Faye Sloan went to be with her Lord on Friday, November 4, 2011, in Lisle, IL, where she had been a resident for three years.
“Mrs. Sloan” was how Leona was known by several thousand high school and junior high students in three school systems in northwestern Ohio. Leona (Crockett) Sloan began her one and only career -- at 20 years of age -- after graduating from Bowling Green State University with a double major in business education and P.E. Her first teaching position was as a business education teacher in Green Springs High School in 1938. After one year, she moved to Perrysburg High School.
In 1943, Leona married Kenneth Sloan and began her career in the Swanton Local Schools. Leona and Kenneth lived all their 50 years of married life in Swanton. Kenneth worked in several positions for the Pilliod Cabinet Company, retiring in 1980.
Leona taught part-time in Swanton Junior High, teaching both English and physical education, while starting to raise her two children. When she decided to return to full-time teaching, she moved to the business education department at the high school. During her long career, Mrs. Sloan taught with numerous colleagues, principals and superintendents. She maintained life-long friendships with staff and many of her students as well. Her class subjects were Business Education, Shorthand, Accounting, and Typing. Mrs. Sloan retired in 1981 after 32 years in the Swanton Schools.
Leona enjoyed athletic hobbies, and played in golf and bowling leagues. She also was one of the original members of a bridge club, spanning over sixty years. Leona was also a long-time member of a study club named Questors.
Leona Faye Crockett was born in Metamora, Ohio, to William and Clara Crockett right after midnight January 1, 1918. Leona was the fourth of six children and grew up on a farm close to town. Three of her siblings chose the teaching profession. Older sister Eleanor taught first and second grades in the Lyons Ohio system. Older brother Almond was a high school teacher, coach and principal in several northeastern Ohio systems. Younger sister Carrie (Fisher) also chose business education and taught in Toledo. Her older sister, Celma, married a Sloan brother, Pearl, and lived in Swanton. Her younger brother Bill took over the family farm.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; sisters Eleanor Crockett and Celma (Mrs. Pearl) Sloan; brother Almond Crockett, Mentor, OH. Leona is survived by her daughter. Karen and husband Mark Shoup, Naperville, IL and son Bob and wife Janis, Ft. Wayne IN. She is also survived by five grandsons, Timothy Shoup, Copenhagen, Denmark, Jeremy Shoup and his wife Jamie, Bolingbrook, IL, Daniel Shoup, Naperville, IL, Brent Sloan, Ft. Wayne, IN, and Christopher Sloan, New Haven, IN. Leona will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
