Leo Donald Ronau (Don), 82 of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 3 after a battle with multiple illnesses.
He was born May 24, 1925 to Nicholas Francis and Anna (Bellner) Ronau in Maumee, Ohio. When he was in his teens, his family moved to Berkey, Ohio.
Don was a farmer all his life, but he also worked for 28 years as a shipping clerk at AP Parts in Toledo. He was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and gardening. One of his favorite pastimes was giving away beautiful bouquets of home-grown flowers to friends.
Don spent numerous hours in his woodworking shop, making wood duck boxes, squirrel boxes, bird feeders, bat houses, and bluebird houses; all of which he gave away. His wood duck boxes have been distributed to all 88 counties in Ohio as well as to locations in more than six other states. In recognition of his work in wildlife conservation, he was awarded a membership to Nature’s Nursery Center and received a lifetime contribution award from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, brother Francis, and sisters Mildred Restle, Lauretta Simonet, Virginia Dohr, and Agnes Malburg.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy (nee Buckenmeyer); daughter, Wendy Allen (Gary); sons Bob (Karen), Nick (Connie), Charlie; Ted (Gretchen), and Brad; 18 grandchildren and four great-grand children. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond and sister, Jean Raab.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Tuesday, May 6th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton, where a Scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 7th at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Fr. Dennis Metzger and Sr. Joy Barker officiating. Interment will follow at Marygrove Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
