Leo Thomas Hanley, age 79, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 2009, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was born January 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Helen (Redmond) Hanley. He married Theresa Marie Dugan on August 23, 1952. She preceded him in death on February 23, 2006.
Leo earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and worked for Owens-Illinois as a computer technician. He retired from the US Army, and at one time was the oldest active paratrooper.
He was a member of the Swanton American Legion Post #479, was one of the first members of the Swanton Volunteer Rescue Unit, and also enjoyed doing volunteer work at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Parish, where he served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister.
Leo is survived by his children, Thomas (Cathy) Hanley of Jacksonville, Florida, Sean (Jessica) Hanley of Bullhead City, Arizona, Terri (Geno) Wasserman of Swanton, Ohio and Leo Hanley, Jr. of Perrysburg, Ohio; 9 grandchildren, Killian and Curran Hanley (Tom), Kim, Sean, Jr. and Laura (Sean), Zachary, Alex, Jason, and Lindsay Wasserman (Terri); 2 step grandchildren, Jesselle and Korynne (Sean); brothers, Jim, Mike (Helen) and Bill (Joan) Hanley; sisters, Maureen (George) McGlone and Kay McCarthy; and his feline friend, Beau.
Besides his wife, Theresa, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ed, Bud, and Bob Hanley.
Family and friends may visit Monday July 6th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where a Scripture service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, July 7th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church. Fr. Daniel J. Zak will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Memorial Garden with military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
