Joseph M. Michalkiewicz, age 84, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal rest, Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Grand Rapids Care Center. He was born May 18, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and Magdalene (Lubiatowski) Michalkiewicz. Joe loved playing baseball, and was even called to try out for the Toledo Mud Hens. However, he was called to war. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On April 29, 1951, he married Jennie Stevens.

Joe worked for the Jeep Corporation for 27 years, until his retirement in February of 1988. He was a member of UAW Local 12 and long-time parishioner at St. Richard Catholic Church. Joe enjoyed sports and was an avid card player.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jennie; children, Mike (Wanda) Michalkiewicz, Linda Baker, Tom (Tina) Michalkiewicz, and Gary (Tammy) Michalkiewicz; grandchildren, Sara, Jason, Matthew, Michael, Ryan, Troy, Zachary and Garrett; great-grandchildren, Logan, Noah and Kylie; sisters, Gertrude Koltienski and Virginia Jujawski; brothers, Eugene, Harry and Walter Michalkiewicz, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen and Irene; and brothers, Vince, Frank and Chester.

Friends and family may visit Thursday, July 24th from 6 to 8 pm and Friday, July 25th from 3 to 9 pm, at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where a Scripture service will be held at 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 26th at St. Richard Catholic Church, with Fr. Robert Holden officiating. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Heartland Hospice.
