Joseph R. Kovacs, Sr. age 72, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal life, Christmas morning, December 25, 2010, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was born February 4, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio, to Joseph S. and Mary (Benko) Kovacs. Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School and on April 11, 1959, he married Beatrice Hofbauer. He worked for the Toledo Machining-Chrysler Corporation in Perrysburg, retiring in 1996. Joe then worked for the Luk Corporation in Wooster for a short period.
Joe was a faithful member of St. Richard Parish. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hands of Grace, and Knights of the Roundtable of St. Francis. Through his love for football, he touched many young lives coaching at Christ the King Parish.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 51 ½ years, Beatrice; children, Joseph R. (Terrie) Kovacs, Jr., John A. (Fianceé Lora) Kovacs, Jeffery M. (Diane) Kovacs, Jeannine M. (James) Hull, James (Christine) Kovacs and Douglas A. (Cindy) Kovacs; grandchildren, Erin Beier, Kelly, Sarah, Andrea and Kevin Kovacs, Samantha and Jessica Hull and Katherine, Anna, Zachary, Cole and Nathan Kovacs; and great-grandchildren, Chad Collins and Anne Marie Beier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Brian Christopher Kovacs; and granddaughter, Emily Kovacs.
Friends and family may visit Tuesday, December 28th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton where a Rosary Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus. Joe’s body will lie in state one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday, December 29th at St. Richard Catholic Church, where the Mass of Resurrection will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ronald Olszewski officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hands of Grace, St. Vincent De Paul, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
