Joan Rose (Carroll) Mossing, age 93, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal life, Monday evening, March 25, 2024 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Sylvania. Joan was born January 29, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio, the oldest child of Clarence P. and Marie Cecelia (Feidt) Carroll. Growing up a farm girl, Joan would rather work in the fields with her dad than bake with her mom in the kitchen.
A woman ahead of her times and the 1st generation of her family to attend college, Joan chose a profession in nursing that defined her character of “service.” Joan excelled in elementary and high school, graduating at the top of her class from Swanton High School. She obtained her BS from Miami University, her nursing diploma from Christ Hospital School of Nursing, and a MS in Health Education from The University of Toledo. Joan worked as a registered nurse at Toledo Hospital, taught at Toledo Hospital School of Nursing and retired as a school nurse for Swanton.
Joan and her husband, Robert T. Mossing, were high school sweethearts. Bob returned from active duty in the Air Force on October 6, 1954, and they married January 8, 1955. Joan and Bob built their house on Bancroft Street in 1957, which became Joan’s “home” for the rest of her life.
Joan was a devout Catholic. She was a member of Holy Trinity-Immaculate Conception Marygrove, the church her grandfather helped build, where she was baptized, married and dedicated all her children.
Bob and Joan raised 7 children as a team. Joan’s focus was on faith, hard work, education, and service. Bob and Joan have been lifelong pillars of their faith community. Active in leadership and service and a tremendous example for all to see. Hard work was never a burden, it was simply how we lived. The kids all started working for the local farmers as soon as they could. Growing up quickly, they all embraced the rewards and satisfaction of hard work. To this day, all her children take immense pride in their gardening and landscaping, a gift from Joan. Education was always the greatest gift she thought she could give to her children. She challenged, encouraged, and drove them to pursue education as the key for enabling them to “choose” their paths and dreams. Consistent with her commitment to service, Joan served in the Parish Nurse Association, as well as the boards of the Swanton Public Library, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department and Heartbeat of Toledo.
Joan Mossing’s story is amazing …. 69 years of marriage… a love story that all had ring side seats for. But her story is not finished! Her story will play out in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Robert; children, Mark (Carolyn) Mossing; Mary Ann (Steve) Conley; Matthew (Adria) Mossing; Allan (Sharon) Mossing; and Eric Mossing; daughter-in-law, Christine Mossing; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Eunice Gilbert; sister-in-law, Connie Carroll; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, sons - Michael Mossing and Thomas Mossing, infant daughter Susan Mossing, and her brother, Robert Carroll.
