Jean Frances Carr, age 88, of Waterville, Ohio, passed away Tuesday morning, June 8, 2010, at The Ebeid Hospice Residence of Sylvania. She was born May 16, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to Leland and Barbara (Malone) Lathrop. Jean married Dr. Glen Carr on June 27, 1946; he preceded her in death on December 23, 1991. She helped her husband as a veterinarian’s assistant, secretary, and bookkeeper, retiring in 1986.

Anyone whoever met Jean, and they numbered in the hundreds, never forgot her. She had a wit and joy for life that affected those around her. For her recent birthday she received more than thirty cards, many of which remarked on how she taught them how to live life and most important, how to laugh. Her sense of humor and love of people were Jean’s overriding qualities. She was rarely without a joke or one-liner that made her a joy to be around. Her special gift was playing the piano by ear. She couldn’t read a note of music, but if she heard a song she committed it to memory and instantly sat down at the piano and played it.

At the Browning Masonic Residence, where she lived the last two years, they had a “Sign-along with Jean” every Friday night when the residents would join around her at the piano and sing the old standards. But Jean loved The Beatles as well. She was the Queen of the Ball, and had hilarious nicknames for many of her friends.

She enjoyed dancing, storytelling, traveling, going to antique shows, and reading. Centennial Terrace was the regular hangout for Jean and her husband and their many friends every Saturday night. There was always a line of men waiting to dance with Jean. Late-night parties and scrambled eggs at 4 a.m. back at Jean’s house were regular happenings after Centennial closed.

Well into her 80s Jeans quips kept everyone laughing. But don’t argue politics with her, because she kept up with the current events and was not afraid to state her beliefs. People who called her one of their best friends numbered in the dozens. Jean was quite simply loved by everyone. Her sense of humor eventually led her to clown school, where she graduated as “Jake,” and would squirt you in the eye with her flower when you least expected it.

Few people knew how well-read Jean was and how extensive a vocabulary she had. Also few people knew that she was once measured on a test with an IQ of 156. And yet she never told a soul except her husband and children. Jean loved to watch Wheel of Fortune, and no one ever beat her, even the contestants on TV.

Jean is survived by her loving children, Thomas (Judith) Carr, of East Tawas, Michigan, Donald “Dee” (Jan) Carr, of Sylvania, Ohio, and Barbara (Douglas) Wolf, of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren Tonya, Mandy, Rusty, Emily, Allison, Brian, Christa and, Kylie, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Friends and family may visit Sunday, June 13th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, Ohio. Visiting hours will continue on Monday from 10 to 12 p.m. followed by a funeral service at noon, with pastors Jerry Jones and Becky Sunday officiating. A private burial will follow at Amboy Twp. Cemetery.
