Irene Viola Komon

Irene Viola Komon, age 94, passed away Saturday January 28, 2012 after a long, happy and fulfilling life. She was born February 8, 1917 in Delta, Ohio, the daughter of Leo and Mareta Gillen. She attended St Mary’s school in Assumption, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank after 52 years of marriage.

She spent the majority of her life raising eleven children. Her work life included The Box factory, Metamora Village Clerk, and Lefty’s Recreation. Irene contributed to the writings of Metamora Ohio’s 100 year history.

Throughout her life she loved doing embroidery, traveling, singing Happy Birthday to her family and friends, listening to country music, claiming to be a boot-legger’s daughter and telling stories; but most of all, loved her husband, children and family gatherings.

She is survived by her 11 children: Fred Komon, Knox, IN; Viola (Dick) Downard, Pemberville, OH; Teresa (Mick) Thompson, Blissfield, MI; John (Helen) Komon, Metamora, OH; Ron (Betty Jennings) Komon, Tecumseh, MI; Anthony (Ellen) Komon, Ballston Spa, NY; Aggie (Harry) Miller, Berkey, OH; Patricia (Bud) Vinson, Soldotna, AK; Yvonne (Randy Morrison) Komon, Fayette, OH; Kathy (Ernie) Meyer, Harlan, IN; and Len (Heather) Komon, Beavercreek, OH. She has 50 grandchildren; 91 great-grandchildren; 43 great-great- grandchildren. Also surviving are her two sisters, Ihla Rose Wittscheck and Verna Green, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Gillen.

Besides her husband, Frank, Irene was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Albert and Maynard Gillen.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, 413 East Main St, Metamora, Ohio, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.. Prayers will begin in the funeral home, Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 10:20 a.m., followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, 1750 N. Raab Rd. in Swanton. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery Assumption, Ohio.
