Herbert August Bettinger, Sr

Herbert A. Bettinger, Sr., age 88, of Richfield Center, passed away, Saturday morning, November 1, 2014. He was born June 21, 1926 in Berkey, Ohio to the late Norbert August and Julia (Pinkelman) Bettinger. Herbert was a 1944 graduate of Metamora High School, and on April 12, 1947, married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie Hassen.

Herbert worked at Medusa Portland Cement Company for nearly forty years, while still maintaining the family farm. He was known as a jack of all trades - from welding, farming, concrete work, he did it all and did it well.

Herbert was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Assumption, Holy Name Society, and the Lucas County Farm Bureau. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, yard work, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, woodworking, and sitting in the front yard and watching the tractors drive by the house.

Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Rose; daughters, Linda (Cary) Hite of Wauseon, OH, Julia (Tim) Hastings of Orange, CA, and Hilda (Bruce) Weirauch of Defiance, OH; son, Herbert, Jr. (Julie) Bettinger of North Olmsted, OH; son-in-law, Kenneth Hofmann; grandchildren, Bruce (Laurie) Hite, Jennifer (George) Ghesquiere, Carrie Lynn (Dave) Price, Erik (Christy) Hofmann, Debi (Jason) Welch, Megan (Greg) Nygren, Scott (Jamie) Nelson, Nichole (Nicholas) Griepentrog, Joel (Becky) Weirauch, Kevin Weirauch, Shannon Bettinger, and Cara Bettinger; 16 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Lois Bettinger; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Donna Rose Hofmann; brothers, Hilary, Linus, and Karl Bettinger; and sisters, Monica Ronau, Roselyn McBride, Regina Cramer and Ruth Ann Gross.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 4th from 2 to 8 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where a Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday, November 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, where a Mass of Resurrection will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Michael Dandurand presiding. Interment will follow at Wolfinger Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Ebeid Hospice.
