Henry Ford “Hank” Haury, age 88, of Metamora, Ohio, passed away late Tuesday evening, August 24, 2010, after battling a long illness. Hank was born March 23, 1922, the second child of Francis Amy (Keirns) and Henry Fred Haury in Great Divide, Colorado. Hank and his sister, Patricia, were very young when their mother and father passed away. The siblings were placed separately in foster care. Hank found a permanent home with Ralph and Hala Drake of East Toledo. He attended Lake School, but left before graduating to earn money to help support the family. With the outbreak of WWII, Hank joined the Navy as a gunners mate. One of seven ships that he served on was the “John Lykes” which was an old captured German ship. Hank traveled the world in the Navy and enjoyed telling the story of crossing the equator several times. He professed that luck was with him because a ship that was traveling just ahead of his blew to pieces after colliding with a water mine. Playing the harmonica and cutting hair were two life skills that Hank learned while out to sea. After his Honorable Discharge in 1945, Hank met Helen Pospisil and they married on April 24, 1948. The newlyweds settled in Metamora, Ohio.
Mechanically gifted, Hank worked as an auto mechanic throughout his career. During the 1960’s, Hank ran the “West Brook Gulf” service station, which employed his wife, Helen, as his bookkeeper , and son, Randy and daughter, Gail. An avid fan of auto racing, Hank loved attending local sprint car races and the Indy 500 time trials.
After retirement in 1984, Hank took up a strong interest in gardening and shared the produce with family and friends. Being fond of animals, Hank took great pleasure in spoiling his two house cats, Socks and Electra.
Hank was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who died in May of his year, after 62 years of a loving marriage.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail (Craig) Northcott; son, Rany (Beth) Haury; grandchildren, Wendi (Bob Barnett) Huntebrinker, Tracy Gritzmaker, Stephanie (Jason Gonzales) Gype, Dustin (Tara Williams) Haury, and Robert Haury; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Caitlyn, Carter, Lexi, Dawson, and Trevor; sister, Patricia Miller; and longtime friends, Dick and Evelyn Sickles.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Bryan Care and Rehab, as well as Hospice, for their attentive and tender care.
