Helen Antonie Haury, age 84, of Metamora, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, May 1, 2010 at Swanton Health Care, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Czechoslovakia to Bob and Bessie (Hebky) Pospisil on January 24, 1926, Helen crossed the Atlantic Ocean with her parents and came to the United States when she was only 6 months old.
She learned to speak English in the 1st grade at Metamora School and graduated in 1944. As an only child, Helen grew up devoted to her parents and during the 1940’s she worked alongside them in their family owned business, Bob’s Recreation Tavern in Metamora, Ohio. Helen then attended Davis Business School and went on to work as a private secretary for Weber and Haulaund, Attorney’s at Law, in the Spitzer Building in Toledo, Ohio. On April 24, 1948, she married Hank Haury of East Toledo, and they settled in Metamora.
An endlessly supportive and selfless wife and mother, Helen and their two children, Gail and Randy, helped Hank run the West Brook Gulf service station in West Toledo during the 1960’s. Helen was always an exceptionally gifted person known for her beautiful handwriting and her artistic skills. Multi-talented, she could master any skill she set her mind to and taught herself light carpentry skills when she and Hank built their house together.
An accomplished gardener, Helen spent a great deal of her free time landscaping and gardening and sharing the fruits of her labor with her friends and family. She found joy watching wildlife and birds in her back yard. Her home always included a dog and several cats to which she was very attached. A daughter and son could not have wished for a more devoted, wise, and helpful mother. She had the gracious gift for always making others feel special and loved, particularly her grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her husband of 62 years, Hank; children, Gail (Craig) Northcott, Randy (Beth) Haury; grandchildren, Wendi (Bob Barnett) Huntebrinker, Tracy (Matt) Gritzmaker, Stephanie (Todd) Gype, Dustin, Bob (Danielle Lumbrezer); great-grandchildren, Shelby, Kaitlyn, Carter, Lexi, Dawson, and Trevor; sister-in-law, Patricia Miller; and longtime friends, Dick and Evelyn Sickles.
Friends and family may visit Tuesday, May 4th from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, Ohio, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Donna Stutzman officiating. Interment will follow at Amboy Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lenawee County Humane Society, 705 W. Beecher St., Adrian, MI 49221, 517.263.9111.
The family wishes to thank all of mom’s caregivers at Swanton Health Care. Because of their tremendous care, she retained her dignity all throughout the progression of Alzheimer’s.
