Harold Wayne Massie, age 93, of Swanton, Ohio, died suddenly, Tuesday evening, April 10, 2012, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tuscola, Illinois. The youngest of 8 children, he was born December 2, 1918 to the late Anthony Wayne and Myrta Grace (Tucker) Massie. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, and on August 11, 1942, he married his beloved wife, Stella Jablonski.
Harold worked for the Ohio Gas Company, Village of Swanton Waterworks, and retired from maintenance at the 180th Fighter Wing.
Harold was a member of Swanton American Legion Post #479, Swanton Elks Lodge #2462, and Swanton VFW Memorial Post #8598. He enjoyed playing euchre with the guys, and loved visiting Vegas casinos-trying his luck with the slot machines. Harold will be remembered as a true handyman-he could fix anything. He will also be known as the original American Picker. He loved browsing antique shows to find a good bargain and was an expert at refinishing furniture he bought.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 69 years, Stella; children, Melody K. (James B.) Keller, Dallas (Alice) Massie, Linda L. (Emilio) McVey, and Vickie Lynne Massie; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; 5 sisters; and 2 brothers.
Family and friends may visit Sunday, April 15th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home, with Fr. Robert Holden officiating. Interment, with Military Rites, will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
