George Tavtigian, age 84, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home, Thursday morning, December 13, 2012, with his loving wife at his bedside. He was born August 31, 1928 in Delray, Michigan to Vahram and Victoria (Najarian) Tavtigian. He graduated from Swanton High School, Class of '46 and attended the University of Toledo. He married Joyce E. Falor on November 18, 1956. George grew up on the family farm and continued to operate it until his retirement in 1980. He went back to school and obtained his real estate license and worked in real estate for 15 years.
George was a traditional and simple man who was proud of his Armenian heritage. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, and was a charter member of the Swanton Elks and member of Swanton American Legion Post #479.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joyce E. Tavtigian; children, Valerie (Randy) Rehklau, Matthew (Rowena) Tavtigian, Dianna (Brian) Brenot, and Sherrie Tavtigian; grandchildren, Shane, Amber, Rachel, Benjamin, Robert, Anthony, Miranda, and Audrey; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Rennie and Dawn Kasparin (Fr. Karekin); sister-in-law, Marian Tavtigian; as well as several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Vahram and Victoria; and brother, Dr. Richard Tavtigian.
Visitation will be held Monday, December 17th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419.826.2631). Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 18th at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with his brother-in-law, Fr. Karekin officiating. Interment will follow at South Swanton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Swanton Public Library, 305 Chestnut St., Swanton, OH 43558, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
