George Lindsay

January 3, 1935 — December 16, 2014

George Lindsay, 79, of Swanton, OH (formerly of Lyons, OH) passed away on December 16, 2014 in Lady Lake, FL. Born January 3, 1935 in Jasper MI to George Senior and Anna (Shadbolt) Lindsay and grew up on the family farm.

George worked as a heavy equipment grader operator in road construction for 44 years. A member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, local 18, active in the Retirees of District 2, well-known for making swiss steak and hobo dinners for potlucks. In his spare time he repaired lawnmowers – he could fix just about anything. He was a member of the Lyons Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 18 years and served on Lyons town council. A member of the Swanton Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years, retiring as the Assistant Fire Chief. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton. As a young man he was a member of the Marine Corp Reserve. Later in life, he was a member of the Elks Club, Sons of the American Legion, and Fulton County Crime Stopper for 17 years. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed camping, vegetable gardening, traveling out west, and after retiring in 1997 he became a snowbird spending winters in Lady Lake, FL. He was truly a unique person that will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Eleanora, son Mark Lindsay of Tremont, IL, daughter Marcia Lindsay of Toledo, OH, daughter-in-law Gayle (Randy) DeBoise of Hudsonville, MI, sister Patty (Dave) Buelow of Hillsdale, MI, sister Julie (Warren) Barber of Winston-Salem, NC, brother-in-law Ivan Gillespie of Wasilla, AK, step-son Jeff (Barb) Vanderdonck of Swanton, OH, step-daughter Jody (Rob) Newman of Nantucket, MA, and brother-in-law Carl (Deanie) Buehrer of Swanton, OH. Grandchildren; Brenna (Brian) Alexander, Maren Lindsay, Noah Lindsay, Jack Lindsay, Hannah Lindsay, Korey (Kelly) Kashmer, Kourtney (John) Garrow, Kaleigh Taptich, and Kristy Goodell. Step-grandchildren; Amy (Ryan) Reiterman, Sara (Dave) Hamilton, Kevin Vanderdonck, Jenah, Lia, and Julia Newman. Great grandchildren; Cameron Alexander, Kennedy Kashmer, Karalynn Kashmer, Cali Garrow and Carli Garrow. Step-great grandchildren; Carson and Brayden Hamilton. Adopted granddaughter Nan (Jishun) Yu, their daughter Zimeng, and Nan’s parents Wenxin and Ninghui Lu of Beijing, China. Many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents George Sr and Anna Lindsay, one son Michael Lindsay, one brother Larry Lindsay, one sister Joyce Gillespie, and brother-in-law Marvin Buehrer.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 21st, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 N. Main St. in Swanton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Swanton Fire Department or Trinity United Methodist Church.
