Frederick Roy Tober, age 81, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal rest, Wednesday morning, November 26, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee. He was born July 3, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio, to Paul and Geraldine (Verity) Tober. On August 22, 1953, he married the love of his life, Midge Haynes. After 46 years of marriage she preceded him in death in 1999 on their wedding anniversary.
Fred served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany near the Russian border. He enjoyed his time in Germany so much that he continued to travel the world later in life. He started working at A&P in Toledo, Ohio, as a night stocker and moved to Monroe, Michigan as a store trainer. In 1963 he was promoted to store manager and transferred to Swanton. In 1975 he started his own IGA store and sold it after 5 years. Fred worked for the Ohio Gas Company in Sales for 10 years. He then delivered mail for the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 2002. In addition, he sold real estate for Perkins Realty until 2005.
Fred help found the Swanton Rescue Squad, faithfully serving for 22 years, most of that as chief. He was a charter member of the Swanton Elks; member of the Exchange Club, Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge and the Zenobia Shriners. He also served on the Fulton County Hospital Board for several years. Fred enjoyed his retirement years traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
Fred will be greatly missed by his children, Katherine (Stephen) Poca and Jeffery (Peggy) Tober; sister, Marian Rice; grandchidren, Matthew Poca, Julia Poca, Lauren (Richard) Monk, Alyssa (Matthew) Cogdill, Ryan Tober (fiancee' Olivia); and great-grandchildren, Blakely and Kathryn Ellis Monk, Banks Codgill, and soon-to-be 4th great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 28th, from 10 to 1 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Visitation will continue at Providence Lutheran Church, 8131 Airport Hwy., Holland on Saturday, November 29th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., where a memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Assistant Judith Atkins officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Swanton Fire and Rescue or Fulton County Health Center.
