Elsie Marie Mikola

September 2, 1919 — December 9, 2013

Elsie Marie Mikola, passed away late Monday evening, December 9, 2013 at Elizabeth Scott Community. She was born in Wyandot, Michigan on September 2, 1919, the daughter of Mary Hintz Romanowicz,and Stanley Romanowicz. Her father was killed in a work related accident when she was six years old and her mother died of peritonitis when she was seven. She and her younger brother, Edward, and sister, Jane, came to live with the Hintz family on Girdham Road in Swanton, Ohio. She was inseparable from her younger siblings and always considered herself their mother.

Elsie married Leo M. Mikola in 1936. Her grandmother taught her how to cook and bake, and she excelled in both. What she loved most was her huge vegetable and flower gardens and would enter specimens and arrangements in fairs and flower shows. She had a drawer full of ribbons and awards. She was active in her church, St. Richard’s in Swanton, Ohio, being a charter member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, serving as its secretary, and also the Rosary Altar Society. Elsie was a fun-loving woman who bowled and loved playing cards, especially Poker.

The mother of three beloved daughters, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia (William) Koepfer, Toledo, Ohio, Janet (Neil) Miller, Lambertville, Michigan, and Sheryl Angus, Flower Mound, Texas. She is also survived by grandchildren, Laurel Johnson, Columbus, Ohio, Michael Koepfer, Ida, Michigan, Stacey Leonard, Toledo, Ohio, William P. Koepfer, Swanton, Ohio, Lisa Klatt, Ottawa Lake, Michigan, Thomas Miller, Lambertville, Michigan, Jonathan Miller, Sylvania, Ohio, James S. Angus, Dallas, Texas, Joshua Angus, Dallas,Texas and Benjamin Angus, Flower Mound, Texas; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and sisters-in-law, Olive Mikola and Betty Lagger.

Besides her parents, and husband Leo M., Elsie was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Romanowicz and sister, Jane Corbett.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 15th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419.826.2631). Prayers will begin in the funeral home Monday, December 16th at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church. Father Douglas Garand will preside and Deacon Jerry Ziemkiewicz will assist. Interment will follow at East Swanton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
