Elpidio Jose Duran, known lovingly as Joseph, was born August 6, 1935, in Crystal City, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home in Maumee, Ohio, on Thursday morning, August 29, 2024. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Joseph lived a life marked by hard work, pride in his heritage, and a love for family.

Joseph's journey began on the basketball courts of Swanton High School, where he graduated in 1957 making a name for himself as a guard on the team. Soon after, on November 29, 1958, he married the love of his life, Josie Espinoza, in Holgate, Ohio. Their partnership was one of mutual support and unwavering affection, creating a loving household and fostering memorable moments for their family.

After marrying Josie, Joseph was drafted into the United States Army, where he served proudly, demonstrating his commitment to his country. Upon returning, he began a long 26 year career as a mechanic for UPS.

Joseph took immense pride in his Mexican heritage, which he celebrated through his love for Mexican music. This passion, along with his enthusiasm for watching golf and boxing, often filled his home with joy and laughter. Notably, he cherished his time on the golf course, proudly recounting his achievements, including two holes-in-one at Valleywood Golf Club.

Joseph is survived by his three children, Kristina Laslo, Thomas Duran, and Angie Duran; his brother, Seasario Duran; along with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and pride in his roots.

Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josie, as well as his parents Ysidro and Petra Maldonado Duran; brothers, Sylvester and Ysidro; and sisters, Petra, Delfina, Esperanza, and Mary. Joseph's life was a testament to family values, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm (Noon) at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, Ohio, where funeral services will begin at 12:00 (Noon), with Fr. Eric Culler presiding. Interment with military honors will follow at East Swanton Cemetery.
