Edward Charles Smith, age 82, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home, Saturday morning, August 9, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was born April 9, 1926 in Berkey, Ohio to Grant and Cora (O’Neil) Smith. He attended St. Mary’s School in Assumption and graduated from Metamora High School in 1944. Ed served in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea.

On August 8, 1953, he married Kathleen M. Wilson. She preceded him in death on April 3, 1999. He married Doris Smith on November 9, 2002.

Ed was a carpenter for Local Union 1138. He retired in 1988. His hobby was to buy up used bicycles, repair and then sell them. His front yard along State Route 64 would be neatly lined with bicycles and barrels for sale.

Ed was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Catholic War Veterans Post #306 in Assumption, Lyons VFW Post #7574, Swanton American Legion Post #479, Catholic Order of Forresters and Knights of Columbus #2850 in Swanton.

Ed is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Jim (Melanie) Smith of Richfield Center, OH; daughter, Luann Smith (Jerry Winter) of Metamora, OH; grandchildren, Dana (James) May, Erin, Megan, Aaliyah and C.J. Smith, Troy Haney, Shane Haney, Justin Helton and Katie Helton; 8 great-grandchildren; loving sister, Marjorie Gillingham; sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith and faithful companions, Blackie and Spot.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Bonnie Haney and brother, Cecil Smith.

Friends and family may visit Tuesday, August 12th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. and a military service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
