Donald Eugene West

Donald Eugene West, age 63, lifelong resident of Berkey, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, February 18, 2023, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio.  Don was born August 14, 1959 in Sylvania, Ohio to Charles and Naomi (Stallsworth) West.  He was a 1978 graduate of Evergreen High School.  Don worked at Johnson Controls (now Clarios) in Holland, Ohio for 39 years, recently retiring in 2022.  

Don was born into a musical family.  At a young age, he learned to play the Bass guitar and also sang.  He played in numerous bands throughout the years.  His last band was known as Northern Comfort. He loved to go Sodbuster every Sunday night and jam with Bobby May.  He loved his Corvette and loved taking his dog Gabby for buggy rides.  Don never met a stranger. He was known to be kind and easy going.  He loved all of his co-workers from Clarios as well. Don was married to Catherine Hellrung for 32 years. 

Surviving Don is his son, Matt Southard; daughter, Nichole Fair; sister, Joyce (Tom) Beroske; and his favorite nephew, Shawn (Dawn) Meeker.  

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russell West; sister, Nina Taylor and brother-in-law, Gene Taylor. 

Visitation will be held Sunday, February 26th from 2 to 5 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home, 413 E. Main Street in Metamora. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucas County Humane Society.
