Derek Robert Gergich, age 22, passed away unexpectedly in a tragic car accident on October 6, 2012. Derek was born on June 20, 1990, to Robert & Sandra (Gillen) Gergich. He graduated from Swanton High School in 2008. He then attended Bowling Green State University and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was most recently employed as a tree trimmer with Penn Line. Derek was full of life and loved the outdoors. Some of his favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, wakeboarding, boating, and hanging out with his friends where he was known as “Pickles.” Derek loved the game of soccer and spent many hours with friends and family playing the sport. He also enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, the Red Wings, the Steelers and Ohio State. His kindness, smile, and vibrant personality will always be remembered by all that knew and loved him.
Derek was loved by many and is survived by his parents, Robert & Sandra Gergich; sister, Leslie Gergich; grandmothers, Jane Gillen and Cora Gergich; aunts and uncles, Jeff & Michelle Gillen, Scott & Jennifer Gillen, Tom & Lynette Gergich, Bill & Penny Gergich, and Cheryl & Garry Old; cousins, Logan & Justin Gillen, Alexandra, Andrew & Austin Gillen, Amanda & Zach Gergich, Ashley & Bill Gergich, and Katie, Maggie, Shawn & Emily Old; as well as a large number of other close family & friends. Derek was preceded in death by Grandfathers, Gale Gillen and Thomas Gergich, and Uncle, David Gillen.
Family and friends may visit from 2 pm to 8 pm, Friday, October 12th at
Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut Street, Swanton. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 13th at St. Richard’s Church, 333 Brookside Drive, Swanton. Interment will follow at Springfield Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Derek’s name can be made to: Swanton Boys H.S. Soccer Team, Ronald McDonald’s House, or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
