David Eugene Zeigler, affectionately known as “Gene”, age 83, of Swanton, Ohio, died early Saturday morning, October 25, 2008, at the Swanton Health Care and Retirement Center. He was born April 21, 1925, in Harding Township to Oma and Azella (Coon) Zeigler.
Gene was a 1943 graduate of Swanton High School and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following the service, he received his Bachelor’s of Education degree from Bowling Green State University. He began student teaching at Fallen Timbers Junior High in Whitehouse, Ohio, and consequently, spent his entire career there teaching math and science. He made friends with everyone, especially young people.
Gene was a member of the Lucas County Farm Bureau and loved flying his airplane from the family airstrip. He chaperoned many trips with the American Symphonic Concert, traveling to England, Europe and Switzlerland.
He is survived by his brothers, Robert O. (Helen) Zeigler of Holland, OH and Clarence H. (Marie) Zeigler of Swanton, OH, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katherine Jeska, and her son, James Jeska.
Friends and family may visit Monday, October 27th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 28th at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Barbara Jean Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Sharples Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton or Living Faith United Methodist Church in Holland.
