Charles (Charlie) Dale Warner was born June 9, 1938 to Milford Starr and Margaret (Dernier) Warner. Charlie was far from being their first child he was number 8 with nine more to follow. Yes, he was one of seventeen; and all single births.
He attended Holland and Crissey schools. He loved sports, especially football and basketball. He scored 22 points in a basketball game. He was a very good football player and really liked playing, but when he came home all bruised his mom made him quit.
He dropped out of school and went in the Army. He served in Inchon, Korea as a fireman (and still keeps in touch with a couple of his friends Don Stoner and Acie Wells). That is where he really grew up at the age of 17.
When he returned home he worked in a Greenhouse on Violet’s Road (Now St. Anne’s Hospital). He was enjoying life, until February 19, 1961. His buddies all went to Bowling Green to hear a co-worker play in a band. His Dad said he shouldn’t go, because they were predicting bad weather. Dad was right and on their way home going through Maumee, his buddy that was driving crashed into a concrete bridge, the impact ejected Charlie out of the car, tearing off his left foot, causing a severe head trauma injury and breaking his right hip and pelvic.
He survived and after adjusting to a new way of walking, he met the love of his life; Mary Theresa Lewandowski. They met in February, 1965 and they married on January 7, 1966. Their family grew and on December 10, 1969 they brought home their son, Carlton Dale Warner. He had been born on November 7, 1969. He went on to be a big enjoyment in Charlie’s life. He enjoyed the scout camp outs, their tossing the ball around in the backyard (yes, there where broken windows). Charlie tried to never miss Carl’s sporting events, track, baseball, soccer, basketball, golfing in the backyard (more broken windows).
He worked for Power Brushes Inc. for 15 years, until at the age of 41 he had to take disability retirement. They lived on McTigue Dr. for 32 years and moved to Swanton in May, 1999. Charlie met the local priest at St. Richard Catholic Church, Fr. Daniel J. Zak. This was the biggest change in his life. God had truly entered his life and he became a Christian on April 10, 2004.
He was a member of St. Richard Men’s CHRP Team # 5, a third degree member of Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Chapter 2850. He had worked the food pantry and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. He prayed the rosary daily, and when he could, before his illness, he enjoyed his hour at Mary’s Chapel of Adoration. He loved to watch golf, The Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Football and Notre Dame Football.
