Cecil G. Smith, age 79, of Assumption, Ohio, died Sunday morning, July 6, 2008, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center, where he was taken on Saturday. He died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with asbestosis.
Cec was the middle child of Grant and Cora (O’Neil) Smith, Assumption, Ohio. He attended St. Mary’s School in Assumption (now known as Holy Trinity) and graduated from the Metamora High School in 1947. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In 1957, he married Carolyn Ray of Toledo, and she survives. They are the proud parents of four children: son, Michael (Susan) Smith of Metamora: daughter, Beverly (Paul R.) Ward of Massillon, OH: daughter, Dr. Connie S. Smith-Trax (Dr. Tim Trax) of Toledo and Berkey, OH, and son, Curt (Marcene) Smith of Swanton, as well as 7 grandchildren: Casie Marie & Tony Smith, Leah & Paige Ward, Emily & Claire Smith and Tommy Trax. Cecil is also survived by a brother, Edward C. Smith and sister, Marjorie Gillingham, both of the Metamora/Swanton area.
Cecil loved his family, his dogs and his horses. He had been a Cement Mason and was a member of the Cement Masons’ Local #886 since 1960 (48 years). Cecil was Past Commander of the VFW Post #7574 in Lyons, Ohio and also was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post #306 in Assumption and the Swanton American Legion Post #479.
Friends and family may visit Wednesday, July 9th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. and a military service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 10th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lyons VFW Post #7574, Catholic War Veterans Post #306 or Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Williams and Fulton Counties in Archbold.
