Carolyn R. Smith

Carolyn R. Smith, age 86, of Metamora, Ohio, entered into Heaven to be greeted by her husband, Cecil. She died peacefully, Thursday morning, March 6, 2014, at Ebeid Hospice, with her children by her bedside. Carolyn was born May 15, 1927 in Toledo, Ohio to Anthony and Gertrude (Shaffer) Ray.

Carolyn attended Blessed Sacrament grade school and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1945. She obtained her Bachelor’s of Education Degree from The University of Toledo, and taught 4th grade for over 30 years at Evergreen Elementary School in Lyons, Ohio. In 1957, Carolyn married Cecil G. Smith. They were married 52 years until his death July 6, 2008.

They are the proud parents of four children: son, Michael (Susan) Smith, daughter, Beverly (Paul R.) Ward, daughter, Connie (Tim) Trax and son, Curtis (Marcene) Smith. She loved her grandchildren, Casie (William) Carr, Tony Smith, Leah and Paige Ward, Tommy Trax, and Emily & Claire Smith. She also leaves behind a feisty Scottish terrier, Molly.

Besides her husband, Cecil, Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Gertrude; and brother, Robert Ray.

Mom was a very diverse lady. She loved teaching, writing, learning and studying about the Civil War. She enjoyed horses, dogs and being involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. We will greatly miss our Mom. She was the rock of our strong family. She taught us all how to be good parents, faithful, stubborn and of course our love of chocolate!

Mom, when you see Dad up in Heaven, tell him Hello and that we miss him so. We are glad that the two of you are together again.

Friends and family may visit Saturday, March 8th from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where services celebrating her life will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Fr. Michael Dandurand presiding. Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Assumption will be held at a later date.
