Bobbie L. Downing passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Ebeid Hospice Center in Sylvania, OH. He was born on November 4th, 1927 in Hutchinson, KS to Charles H. and Millie (Bertha) Downing. Bob graduated from Lyons High School in 1946. He married the love of his life Myrtle Derby in 1950, who survives.
Bob worked as a tool and die maker for Dura Corporation in Adrian, MI. While employed there he held offices in Local 1348 as a Committeeman, Financial Secretary & President. He retired after 29 years in 1993. He was also an active member of the Lyons Christian Church, serving as a trustee. He was a Lyons Volunteer Fireman for 42 years, and served on the Lyons Board of Public Affairs.
Everyone loved his great sense of humor, but he will be most remembered by his ambition and devotion to his family. Bob loved to travel and enjoyed spending summers at their cottage at Devils Lake, MI. The family enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. He especially enjoyed spending his winter months with Myrtle in Ft Myers/Cape Coral, Florida.
Besides his devoted wife, Myrtle, Bob leaves to cherish his memory three children, Teresa (Randy ) Burgermeister of Lyons, OH, Cheryl (Frank) LoFiego of Sylvania, OH, and Mark (Taryn) Downing of Lyons, OH . Also surviving are six grandchildren, Joshua (Jessica) Burgermeister, Jessica Burgermiester, Cara (Shawn) O’Neill, Tony (Brittany) LoFiego, Dominic (Cheryl) LoFiego, and Alicia Downing (Ray Hohenbrink). He enjoyed spending time with his six great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ella Burgermeister, Jace Burgermeister, Shamus, Maggie, and Finnegan O’Neill, Isabella LoFiego, and Clayton Hohenbrink.
Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Downing of Wauseon, OH, Doris Derby of Morenci, MI, and Alberta Haupricht of Lyons, OH; two brothers-in-law, Gerald (Sondra) Derby of Sand Creek, MI and Roger Schantz of Archbold, OH; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Vernard and Donzell Downing.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 26th at the Lyons Christian Church, 138 E. Morenci Street in Lyons, OH from 9:00 - 11:00 am, with the funeral services immediately following at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Lyons Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Paul Bomeli, their Lyons Christian Church friends, Ebeid Hospice Center, and Nadine from Visiting Nurses Services.
