Billy Robert Chinnis

September 19, 1922 — February 18, 2025

Swanton, Ohio

Billy Robert Chinnis, age 102, of Swanton, Ohio, a veteran of three wars, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at the Charlotte Stephenson Senior Living Community in Adrian, Michigan. Billy was born September 19, 1922, in Toledo, Ohio, to Roy and Frances (Riggins) Chinnis.

After graduating high school, Billy enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country as a World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran. It was during his military service that he met the love of his life, Theresa Marie Barone, who served in the United States Marine Corps. Their meeting at a skating rink in San Diego, California, marked the beginning of a beautiful romance that culminated in marriage on December 17, 1952. Their bond exemplified what it meant to be partners in life, sharing countless adventures and joys together until Theresa's passing on March 30, 2022.

Billy's career included a noteworthy tenure as a Supervisor for Burroughs Corporation, where he dedicated 15 years of his life before retiring in 1985. He was a pillar of strength and a source of wisdom for his colleagues and friends throughout his career.

Outside of work, Billy was an active member of the Swanton American Legion Post #479 and dedicated member of the Honor Guard. Billy volunteered at the Fulton County Fair every year and marched in many community parades. An avid golfer, he enjoyed spending his leisure time on the green, and he also found joy in bowling and camping. Dancing was a particular delight for Billy and Theresa, as they often ventured out to share the dance floor, a testament to their enduring affection for one another. They also looked forward to wintering in Florida, and enjoyed over 20 years of watching many horse shows in Lenawee County.

Billy is survived by his son, Glen (Nancy) Chinnis; daughter, Donna (Michael) Woody; and a loving group of grandchildren, including Jennifer (Jim) Fanoele, Eric (Jackie) Rooks, Richard (Kristy) Woody and Katlyn Chinnis. His legacy continues with his great-grandchildren: Alex, Alyssa, Ethan, Brayden, Katelyn, Ashlyn, Jace, Jacob, Dominc and Brooklyn, along with many nieces and nephews, all of whom treasured their time with him.

Besides his beloved wife of 70 years, Theresa, Billy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Roy Alan Chinnis; sisters, June Chinnis and Dorothy Smith and brothers, Warner and Warren Chinnis.
