Betty J. Arvin, age 87, of Swanton, Ohio; formerly of McKeesport and Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully listening to hymns, Friday, June 24, 2011 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born November 19, 1923 to Elmer and Clara (Haule) Wiskeman of Dravosburg, Pennsylvania. She graduated from McKeesport Area High School and McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing where she served as class president. She received her anesthetist training at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and worked as a Registered Nurse at McKeesport Hospital and Local Oral Surgeons.

On February 18, 1946, she married her loving husband, Galard M. Arvin, who preceded her in death on April 28, 2010. She was a member of Dravosburg United Methodist Church in PA and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton.

Betty was a loving and caring person. She loved nature whether it was gardening, watching hummingbirds, or gazing at the stars at night. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, and crocheting. Many people are still enjoying her beautiful crocheted afghans.

Even though she lost her speech after her stroke, she still was able to communicate in her own way. She always wanted to thank people for helping her by either giving a smile, putting her hand to her heart, or a pat on the back of your hand. Most importantly, she used sign language to say “I Love You”.

Betty enjoyed being with friends, neighbors, and most important-her family. Her first priority was her family and she cherished every moment with them.

Betty will be greatly missed by her son, Chuck (Carol) Arvin; grandchildren, Chrissy Arvin and Cari (Ty) Langenderfer; and great-grandchildren, Ty and Cora Langenderfer; brother, Bob Wiskeman of Sarasota, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband of 64 years, Galard, she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, John (Grace) Wiskeman, Pauline (Ken) Ross, and Chuck (Lisa) Wiskeman; and sister-in-law, Harriet Wiskeman.

Thank you to Swanton Health Care & Retirement Center for the special care given to her this past year. The family would also like to thank the volunteers and staff of Ebeid Hospice. Words are not enough to thank them for the loving care given to our mom, grandma, and great-grandma. They are and always will be special people to us.

A memorial service celebrating Betty’s life will be held at a later date in Swanton, Ohio and Dravosburg, Pennsylvania.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ebeid Hospice, 5340 Harroun Rd., Sylvania, OH 43560 or Dravosburg United Methodist Church.
