Bessie Pokornik

Lyons, Ohio

Bessie Pokornik, age 94, of Lyons, Ohio, entered through the gates of heaven, Wednesday morning, February 27, 2013, at Heartland of Wauseon. She was born January 24, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan to John and Mamie (Pres) Santavy. On June 26, 1943, she married her loving husband of 61 years, Frank Charles Pokornik, Jr. He preceded her in death on December 14, 2004.

Bessie was very involved with her husband in the day-to-day operations on the farm raising chickens and growing tomatoes. The family enjoyed many camping trips cross country in their motor home. Besides camping, Bessie enjoyed any kind of craftwork; including bead work, making afghans, and crocheting.

Bessie was a faithful member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lyons and its Altar & Rosary Society, serving as treasurer and secretary.

Bessie will be remembered at a wonderful cook and baker. She is survived by her loving daughters, Shirley (Carroll) Griffeth of Lyons, OH and Barbara Pokornik of Lyons, OH; grandchildren, Jeff (Loda) Griffeth, Carla (Matt) Mattimore, and Kurt Griffeth; great-grandchildren, Rebecca Mattimore, Morgan Griffeth, and Riley Griffeth; sister, Rose Daly; brother-in-law, Jerry Pokornik; 1 niece and several nephews.

Besides her husand, Frank, Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances; brother; Ted; and infant twin brother.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 10th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, Ohio. Visitation will continue Monday, March 11th from 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, where a Mass of Resurrection will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Ron Schock officiating. Following a luncheon in the Holy Family Room, graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery in Lyons.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Heartland of Wauseon who cared for Bessie the past 18 years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lyons Volunteer Fire & Rescue.

Visitation: Sunday, March 10th from 6 to 8 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora

Mass of Resurrection: Monday, March 11th at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, where her body will lie in state one hour prior to the Mass

Interment: Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery
