Bertha M. Spurgeon, age 80, of Swanton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord, Friday morning, August 22, 2008, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Archbold, Ohio on August 19, 1928 to Ralph and Olivia (Grime) Dominique. She married Neal C. Spurgeon on August 19, 1947.
She was a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Parish for 50 years and member of its Rosary & Altar Society and Tuesday prayer group. She also was a member of the Swanton Elks Euchre Club. She was an avid bowler for many years and also enjoyed camping with family and friends.
She was employed for many years at Wauseon Wire Mfg. and the K of C Lanes in Swanton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Victor, Richard and Glen Dominique; sisters, Marge Lumbrezer and Elizabeth Minnich; grandsons, Dominic Hess and Joshua Spurgeon; great-granddaughter, Isabelle Hess and daughter-in-law, E. Cerise Spurgeon.
Mrs. Spurgeon is survived by her children, Gloria Lanum, Sue (Evan) Hess, Richard Spurgeon, Elizabeth (Ken) Richabaugh, Virginia Spurgeon, Neal Joseph Spurgeon, Tedd (Deb) Spurgeon, Amy Spurgeon and Lori (Curtis) Onweller; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Friends and family may visit Monday, August 25th from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm, followed by a Scripture service. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 26th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Richard Catholic Church at 10:30 am. Fr. Todd Dominique will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Arrowhead Dialysis, especially, Debbie, Amy and Cathy, for the excellent care of their mother. Also, to the other patients, who made her time in the chair a little more bearable. Thanks to all the staff at The Toledo Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital and Kingston Care Center of Sylvania. To the nurses of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, our thanks and gratitude just doesn’t seem like enough. You helped her and her family over the last days of her life, and for that we will forever remember your kindness.
