Bernie Gustwiller, age 63, of Swanton, Ohio, formerly of Napoleon, Ohio, died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee. He was born August 5, 1950 in Napoleon, Ohio to Virgil and Cecelia (Coressel) Gustwiller. Bernie graduated from Liberty Center High School and received his Associates degree in electrical engineering from Northwest Tech. He worked for General Motors as the fabrication shop supervisor.
Bernie was a United States Navy Vietnam Veteran and a patriotic man. He was the current Commander at the Swanton American Legion Post #479. He was also a life-member and current chaplain of Swanton VFW Memorial Post #8598 and member of the Swanton Elks Lodge #2462. He was a wine and cigar enthusiast and firearms advocate. When his kids were growing up, he enjoyed coaching their little league and softball teams.
Bernie is survived by his life partner, Linda West; daughter, Julie (Gustwiller) Cox; son, Joseph (Alyssa) Gustwiller; grandchildren, Kayla and Andrew Cox; sister, Mary Guswiller, and many extended family and friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jayne (Reimund) Gustwiller.
Family and friends may visit Monday, June 2nd from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419.826.2631). Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 3rd at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ed Strietelmeier officiating. Interment, with Military Rites, will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery in McClure.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Swanton American Legion Post #479, American Heart Association or The American Kidney Foundation.
